As I sat down tonight on our trusty Natuzzi reclining sofa, I pulled the handle to settle down for a bit of XBoxing and "ping", it came off in my hand (ooeer Missus.) The sofa's just out of warranty, but after tipping it over, and carefully removing the dust sheet I spotted that the wire is exactly the same width as a gear/brake cable. I almost just chucked my (very) old mountain bike when the rear bearings gave up last Winter, but I had the foresight (and patience) to strip her of her handle bars (now on hybrid bike) nuts, bolts, tubes, tyres and yes, cables. I knew the cables would be no good for another bike, but "Hey, hey, throw nothing away" is my motto.
Anyway, long story short. Off with the old sofa cable, the new one slotted straight through the housing, a nut/bolt combo in place of the original cables hook, a crimped hollow tip ferrule on the cable inside the handle, dust sheet tacked back on and hey presto, job done.
The moral of this story of course is never, ever throw anything away!
