Get a bike with an awesome frame and then awesome wheels. Gears are less important. Try the Moda Rubato - really good reviews too.

Defy - relaxed geometry and great starter bike which, due the great frame, you can upgrade later on if you feel the need.
Also, being end of season there are loads of good deals on 2012 Giants so unless you're really picky don't bother with a 2013 because they'll be a lot more money for the same bike.

There are some good medium-range bikes to choose from for a first road bike. Then, after a few months or so, you can upgrade once you know what you want/need.

Giant Defy 1, would be a good choice.
Had a test ride on one the other day, was impressed!
