So many tales about him. Like when he arrived in plenty of time, just to be sure, for an Oval test only to find the place locked up (it was 6am) So he started climbing over the wall and was interrupted by a police officer.
Lesser known fact, he was a keeper of peacocks that drove my grandmother-in-law mad!
A great umpire, especially if you were a batsman as he was reluctant to give anyone out. He was also in the days before neutral umpires so it was impressive how he got the respect of visiting teams.
RIP Dickie, I can only just remember him officiating but vaguely remember the disappointment when he along with Steve Bucknor & David Shepherd retired.
i also remember reading his autobiography and that he played alongside Michael Parkinson and Geoffrey Boycott as a young man at Barnsley Woolley Mining CC. I’d visited the NCBs Woolley Westside CPP many times to service our machines and enjoyed the thought they had played cricket at a club with association to the site.
Be nice to think Parky is waiting for Dickie with a nice glass or cup of something they both like. I don’t suppose Geoffrey will be long in joining them….
He umpired in the days of terrestrial TV and home umpires, so that gave him huge exposure.
Today cricket is tucked away on pay per view and we have neutral umpires so no modern umpires will get the exposure of the likes of Bird and Shepherd.
