I noted a On-One Pompetamine 2012 Frame going for £140. Then started to add up the cost of parts to build my ideal commuter bike with the 11 speed hub, mechanical disks brakes, SKS mudguards & chain guards, straight handle bars, racks. My back of an envelope calculations get to about £850. Has anyone built a similar bike? If you have, was it worth it? Is there any way of getting the same without getting my hands dirty and spending less?

Just corrected a typo!

My first singlespeed commuter bike cost fifty quid for the frame and about thirty quid in bits, I've just rebuilt it with a forty five quid frame. I have judiciously added other cheaper lighter nicer bits as they have become available.

Alfine 11 is the lion's share of the cost in your proposed build. Would an 8 speed alfine not do just as well?

If I going for an all nee on-one then I will only be saving about £140 out of the figure I've quoted but if take a fixie and mod it then it would make larger saving and make the whole idea less of a pipe dream. One snag is that the alfine needs an axle width of 135 mm and I am finding that 120mm is more typical. It is possible to bend a steel frame but an aluminium one won't put up with being bent.
