I'm one of the unfortunate few that works on a Sunday. So on my cycle to work in was doing fine, but breezy but a warm day and no problems til...

In primary position im one cars length from a roundabout and mr civic type r overtakes me. I showed my objection and he stopped. I was a little annoyed. The conversation went.

I said he shouldn't have passed so close to the roundabout. He said i should indicate as he's not going along at 10mph so he will pass. He passes cyclists like that all the time I'm the only one that was bothered by it. I said I was going straight on not right at the roundabout and if I was a car you would've waited, I should have 3 foot on my right so I can avoid pot holes or as it's so breezy I may get blown your way. He said he needs to avoid pot holes as well and no one was hurt so he did nothing wrong.

I ran out of reasoning. I said I disagree but will leave it at that.

That's the first time I've confronted a driver. I felt it was a waste of time and wondered if I made a song and dance for nothing.

Anything you could have thrown into the discussion with mr civic type r? Oh and the 10mph part was what he thought all cyclists cycle at .

How many lanes on the approach to the RAB? Did the driver overtake you then cut you up?

Just one lane. I think he was one of the drive around in circles boy racers. Not shy of a burger. 99.9% sure he doesn't cycle.

It has been my experience in life, and particularly in education, that when people refuse to back down in an argument, for the sake of saving face, they are often actually taking your points on board to some extent. With drivers we never have the opportunity to follow up and see if this is true, but in other situations I have often found that other people will show by words or deeds, that later on they have actually come to see things your way, at least to some extent.

All of which is to say that I have an optimistic view of the outcomes of 'discussions' like this. The driver may not be able to admit to your face that they acted inconsiderately, but I am willing to bet their attitudes and actions might change a bit in future, in at least some cases.

This is a point that could be made in the majority of posts like this I read . . . but that would be boring.

It wasn't a waste of time. You made him think. He will remember the incident next time he passes a cyclist and perhaps make a better job of it.

Agreed.

When someone harangues me in an indigant matter for whatever reason, I will instinctively respond in kind, but that doesn't mean I won't think the matter over to myself, without having admitted any fault to you  .
