Hi, I hope this is not too stupid a question and hope it belongs in this section. Please let me know if it would be better posted in 'beginners' section or elsewhere.

I have a Specialized Hard Rock which is about 7 years old and although very well looked after - a bit slow. I commute about 40 miles to work each week mostly on tarmac and I'm looking at getting a newer/faster bike through the Bike To Work Scheme. I have my eye on a Specialized tricross Sport.

The Question: is it worth holding onto the Hard Rock for the worst of the winter weather and trying to keep the road bike clean(er). Or should I just move over to the newer bike and be done with it.

Pros Cons, comments, advice please...

n+1 is the formula.... n is the bikes you have +1 is what you need.

Keep the MTB for off road fun.

I have 4 bikes, and many folk on here have more than that !

I would have thought a Tricross was buit for mud and rain, it should certainly be a bit more durable than a road race bike.
Also if it's through C2W it's only got to last a year until you get a new one, you're not going to lose much, if anything on the Tricross if you sell it in a year.

Imo, yep.

Rack it up and keep it as the "heavy duty" commuter.

Give it fatter tyres and keep it for the stuff you don't fancy rattling your nice shiny new bike over.

Etc etc.

I have 2, one road, one MTB type thing. I use the road bike every work day in all weather apart from ice/snow. the MTB is the only bike that can carry a child seat so thats for the weekend.

As long as you can store it without constantly having 'er indores snarling at you, I'd say it's a no-brainer. Gives you more options (on/off road), plus you have a reserve bike for when you get a visit from You Know Who at the worst possible moment (which is when she likes to drop by). I have a knobbly-tyred hybrid for off-road, which also comes into service on wet days, when my main bike is more prone to punctures.

Thanks for all the responses - general advice seems to be hold onto the existing which I'll do. Did I say 40 miles per week - more like 70 a week plus a run at the weekend :0) Only problem now is which one..... but that's a nice problem to have.
