Well, had all the family over yesterday so today was a day of rest and mooching. Decided to go for our family bike ride before settling to a lazy afternoon. Did first mile and myself, youngest and eldest son are waiting to regroup. Middle boy comes into view but no sign of Jane. He loops back for her and then I see him waving for me. Go haring back to corner and Jane's on the floor thinking she's broken her ankle. A car has stopped to offer assistance, amazingly it's the bike mechanic from my LBS, spooky eh? So I call for ambulance and LBS guy takes Janes bike home for us. Ambulance arrives, Jane onto stretcher, myself and boys cycle home and drive to meet her at hospital.
She's broken her lower right leg in 3 places and her right ankle and is in hospital now awaiting surgery first thing tomorrow. The plan is to put a plate on the outside of the ankle and a pin on the inside. Depending on level of damage will determine length and location of pin/pins. So that'll be 6 weeks in a cast them some pretty painful physio.
We're mystified, she reckons she was almost at a stop and caught her leg as she went to put her foot down. Then she was falling and put her foot out again and just heard a crunching noise. Obviously angle, force and twisting combined, wrong time and place, to produce such severe results. She's never broken a bone in her life, not someone I would have thought of as fragile.
NHS at Frimley Park Hospital were marvelous, she was treated promptly, professionally and, if she hadn't eaten a bit earlier, would have had the surgery this afternoon.
Here's hoping all goes smoothly tomorrow, guess family bike rides are off the cards for a while.
