Opening bank accounts - do they want our money or not?

We've opened a Lloyds account for both of mine once they hit 11 as it's got a Visa Debit. And yes, it was a challenge to open it. Opening a savings account has been similarly difficult with them - we gave up.

However, the Lloyds was worth it for both my kids.

The banks have made it awkward to open a new bank account nowadays but if you want to transfer your account from one bank to another they will reward you????
At one time you could walk into any high street bank and open an account within minutes, now you have to go through multiple security checks and have numerous items of ID before they will "consider" you for a bank account.

Not the fault of the banks that crims do money laundering. They need to protect themselves.

One of mine has a Nationwide youth account and the other their student account. Nationwide seem to be flavour of the month right now. You can open it online and then you need to visit a branch to validate ID.

Edit: they do cash or bank cards, online banking, phone and travel insurance with the account.
A real first world problem.

Son (11) needs his own bank accounts.

We don't want him to have a debit card as we want him to get used to seeing what he's spending.

Some children's current accounts give you an option of a debit card or a cash machine card. Some children's bank accounts have a high limit on the cards, which we don't want.

We both need to go into the bank to open an account, which means a Saturday morning visit. Two banks in our town are open on a Saturday morning. One doesn't offer a cash card-only option. The other is Lloyds. You have to make an appointment for a Saturday morning. They have none until the end of the month.

Only only want to open a bank account. To become their customer and give them our money to use for themselves, and the opportunity to have a long-term customer.

It's rubbish. Not like the olden days.
I had the same problem with Santander, had to find their medical cards to prove their addresses and appointments only available on Tuesday at 14:00 or some rubbish.

They aren't after your money, they want to sell you their way of banking.
Thanks. Do they have cash cards instead, and if so do you know what the withdrawal limit is?
You can have a cash card instead - I am not sure on the limits though, they kids cards are at home, I could check tonight if you want. I expect it would be £200.

A mate of mine works in a bank in Durham City and he gets lots of students with wealthy parents opening accounts.

There was a stewards' inquiry when a young man walked in to open an account with a cheque for £1.3m from his father.

Turned out father was an oligarch and the large starter fund was enable his son to buy a house for the duration of his studies.

I'm in the same boat, and need to make an appointment with my daughter. Halifax I can do it all online, but it's not true - still need the person.
I get why though.

'Arry Redknapp did that, much to the displeasure of HMRC. If it hadn't been for a jury full of Tottenham supporters...

His defence of "I'm thick" would have been believable to any jury member with a knowledge of (ex) footballers, regardless of which team they support.

Kes Jnr (10) has a Go Henry account.... not strictly a bank account, but it has been great at teaching him how to manage his cash.

He gets a multi use card, which can be used as an ATM card, or a debit card - however the beauty of the system is that we can set (and change at any time through the associated parent app) individual limits on single use withdrawal, use as a debit card, on-line payments and/or set a weekly total limit.

We transfer his pocket money automatically every week straight from our bank.

We get emailed whenever he spends money/withdraws cash with full details and there is also a "savings" side that allows us or him to transfer money into a separate area with it's own access controls.
