Thank you, Maz.
It is all elbow grease. Lots of sanding with very fine grades of garnet paper (like glass paper but using garnet dust instead of glass) and oiling with Danish oil in lots of layers over many weeks.

It's clearly a labour of love. I was asking since I recently bought a pine shoe cupboard. It was an awful flatpack from Argos, and a 'friday afternoon' ill-fitting jobby at that. The pine was of very poor quality, knotty and spliced together from different pieces.
Anyway, after following advice on this forum I decided to apply beeswax instead of varnishing it. I'm glad I did - the wood seems nourished and has a really nice feel to it now. Took a while but the result was worth it.
