I was putting new brake blocks on my bike, the new brake blocks were (and still are) in a packet and secured by cable ties. To release the new blocks, I grabbed a (very sharp) knife and tried to cut them off, but my hand slipped and my left hand thumb got in the way of the knife, slicing most of the skin clean off. The wound bled through 2 wound pads, a tissue and a lot of blood ended up on the floor too. Next time I will use wine gums, the packets are far easier to open.

I have cut myself several times despite identifying the inevitability of the pre-cut slips and doing nothing to modify my hand positions and avoiding the bloodletting altogether.

The thinking process normally is:

  • I need to be careful, the knife might slip
  • My fingers are in the direct line of the cutting edge of the knife
  • Don't push/pull so hard the knife will slip
  • It's not working, I'll pull/push harder
  • Oh bugger!

This is very close to my (well my wifes) heart...the use of cable ties/tie wraps, to secure things.
They're far too strong to be safely undone by someone in the average home...unless you've a pair of side cutters handy, they're a pig to cut.
My wife was undoing a (of all things) a kitchen knife attatched to cardboard...with a pair of scissors. The tie wrap was so tight, she had to use force (rather unwisely with hindsight) at which point the knife flipped off the cardboard...right into her knuckle, cutting a tendon.
Quite severe surgery ensued, several weeks work lost (as well as quite a bit of blood)

Be careful out there...a nasty accident can come from nowhere, in a millisecond.

Sounds a nasty cut.
For cable ties and similar packing I use wire cutters, much safer and easier. At a push even nail clippers would do.

Now, if you want to write an injury story, you'll need to do better.
This one on LR4x4 is good.

I had to go to A&E this morning, as it kept on bleeding. They have glued it back together and stiched it up. Took 3 hours!
