Can't agree stongly enough. In Borneo last year I saw how much rainforest had been flattened to make way for the plantations, sickening. If I can avoid I do.

It's getting harder and harder to find stuff without it. It seems to be the default to use it in everything.

Pork pies, chocolate, ice cream, cakes, biscuits, bio fuels grrrr, the list goes on.

I saw that deforestation in borneo, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

It's mainly used because it is cheaper than other oil I believe.
Half of all the palm oil imported into the EU is being used to make diesel greener, must be one of the most idiotic enviroment ideas of all time.

(I think the EU are going to ban it by 2025 or something) why can't they just ban its use in diesel next week.
Ban diesel next week.

Isn't he an actor?

I agree it is terrible. As was the deforestation of Europe, of the British Isles. But of course that was us and therefore it is ok.

Yeah of course it is.
We live in enlightened times so know what damage is being done.

Palm oil is a cheap method to make profit at the expense of the local community that lived there.
And we use our enlightenment to deny those in the South the opportunities our ancestors afforded us "oh well we can't undo our past mistakes" which we continue to benefit from today.

That wasn't my original point and you damn well know it. Stop trolling.

The locals don't see any benefit. In Borneo the land was divided up into large tracts by the British, now owned by corporations - although claim to the land is dubious. Palm oil production does not create much local employment other than in ripping down the forest and all profits are taken overseas. Palm oil is cheap because the land value is low and labour costs are screwed down. The social and environmental harm it causes are not worth a couple of pence off the cost of your chocolate bar. IMHO.

People have no appreciation of the size of the profits made by mega corps like Unilever who specialise in taking ship loads of commodities like palm oil, salt, flour, sugar, protein and water and turning them into something edible like margarine. I'm pleased to hear on R4 this morning that butter is regaining popularity at the expense or marge, so the price of butter and cream is set to rise, which must benefit dairy farmers ultimately.

Unilever, Reckitt, Colgate, P&G and Henkel all make extravagant profits, some since Victorian times, turning cheap commodities into usable products. In the name of profit tropical forest is cut and burned down and replaced with palm plantations.

So reduce the amount of processed foods you eat and the amount of motor transport you use and all's good, right? :okay:

So basically similar to here, where the land was divided up into large tracts by the nobility and the claim to the land is dubious and the locals didn't see any benefit? ;)

Only if you buy your butter from dairy farmers. Unilever's "Flora Buttery" is made with vegetable oil - it probably should be called "I can't believe it's not labelling fraud".

Ultimately, butter is just another processed food, with the major brands owned by mega corps, with the possible exception of Yeo Valley (supplied by OMSCo) and the Arla co-op's brands (Lurpak and Anchor) and even Arla's so big now that I'm not sure how much control the farmer-members have or if it's been captured by its executives. What butter do you buy and who owns it?

Never said I eat it :okay: can't be arsed to make pork pies though, although the shop bought ones are really quite awful.
I do some, but very little. Most of my food is fresh. :okay:

I walk to work ;)
