Here for rides.
Pair of pedal from Taiwan (cos that seems to be the only place on the good earth that stocks shimano mtb double sided spds with reflectors) of eBay

Price of pedal inc of P&P £39.99
ParcelFarce Clearance Fee £8.00 (I can live with that)
Import VAT £42.58

Yep. More than the price of the goods.

Hmmmm. Smell that rip off.

They have a bad habbit of convertin local currency directly into £ - so $80 is £80.

We got stung big style on a 'photo book' from Disney from our holiday. Charged about £30 duty on a £50 photo album.

Be careful with Royal Mail/ parcel force and their import tax charges.

A friend of mine ordered some car parts from Japan, parcel force tried charging him around £350 import tax but they had paid this for him and demanded it back before handing over goods. Now my mate being very legally minded looked into and found it was in fact illegal or not on to do this. He went down to the local collection depot with his evidence. They denied him the goods at first. Then went onto manager and higher up. Took a couple of weeks but he got his goods and the amount due for tax was wrote off as they couldn't do what they had done.

Unsure if your situation falls in this category but worth remembering and looking into.
That sounds terrible. I guess it's import duty on the goods plus VAT on the goods and postage.
No it's a cock up. Import duty & taxes due on £40 is £8.

Customs duty rate for these ex China will be 12%. VAT is calculated on the value, plus shipping clearance costs and duty. They are hiding something else in that VAT figure

The total landed cost for your pedals should've been £47.99. To whom did you pay this 'import vat' ? (There is no import duty due on your goods, only VAT.)

4.7% import duty 20% vat
4.7% is country specific, China is 12%. Lucky its not Vietnam as that is 45% but even on this worst case scenario import VAT does not come to that amount.

Taiwan isn't China (let's not get into that argument).

It most likely includes a handling charge for liaising with HMRC and paying the duty + VAT charges. But Duty + VAT should only be 25.6% (4.7% + 20%) on what you paid PLUS shipping etc charges.

And most likely a fee for paying the duty and vat on your behalf at the point of clearance. We would normally charge a 1.5% deferment use fee for this with a minimum of £ 25.00 but on a full container load its not so much of an issue.
