I use a chain cleaner on old or very dirty chains, and green gunk degreaser is £6.99 per litre or so. Yet to get through a tin of it. Otherwise once the chain has been cleaned up to standard I use the baby-wipe Mickle method.

I still use my PT chain cleaner and purchase citrus degreasers when they are on offer. If you wipe the chain regularly you only need to use the bath now and again. My bike with shimano components has the power link chain so you can take it off and soak it in whatever's handy. I think the chain cleaner has it's uses, certainly dont look down ones nose at it!

I use the park tool now and again and find Ito works great with halfords cheap ish citrus degreaser and do the mickle method between deeper cleans.
