Have you suggested they design a propeller drive instead of a paddle wheel? From my (admittedly limited) experience, anything with a prop will be much easier to pedal and faster, than a paddle... (more efficient, since a submerged prop drives with all its surface are, and a paddle wheel only drives with half or less of its area). Slightly more complicated to build, although the chain on my drive unit handles a 90 degree twist ok...

Gook luck to them anyway!
 
We have 9 pedal powered boats at Cyclemagic - one of which has already crossed the channel and back.

I hope the coast guard will allow them to do it - they should check that out first because a lot of people are stopped from doing crossings.

Not quite a peddalo, but me and some mates made a paddle boat raft a few years ago for the local raft race. Good old Lady Hen!

(I'm at the back left if you were on the raft....opposite side to the guy in the hat)

It would have been fun to have gone across the channel on it....though bits were falling off paddling the mile or two to the start line xx(
