Good morning all, I'm a new member so be gentle with me.

I have recently returned to cycling (through the cycle to work scheme) and am the proud owner of a Ridgeback Flight 3 which I use daily for my 16 mile round trip to work. I am also getting out and about for recreation and am even considering getting my old Kona MTB out of the loft!

However my quandry is pedals.

I am delighted with my bike except the pedals/toe cage (or whatever they're called).

I want to upgrade but would appreciate some views, should I go for SPDs or similar cleats or should I stick with pedals and straps, if so what should I upgrade to?

If you're not happy with toe clips I'd go for SPDs. A set of SPD M520 and relatively inexpensive compatible MTB shoes are where most people start...

Personally I can't get along with spds. My preferred choice is Look. Pedal system choice is a bit like saddle choice - you have to find out what works for you.

Welcome. Hope you stick around.

Commuting and possible mtb'ing - I'd go with SPDs, at least to begin with.

Definitely go for clipless. SPDs are sort of the default - and there are various SPD clones and work-alikes which are cheap. If you're riding off road, SPDs don't clear mud very well, and ATACs or egg-beaters are better.
