Pedestrianised area on my commute

Anyone who knows Derby will know the area in front of the Assembly Rooms is pedestrianised with 'no vehicles' signs displayed. Many cyclists - quite a few looking like they are 'into' serious cycling, riding good spec bikes and having proper lights etc - still cycle through it. It irritates me that I get off my bike in the middle of my commute and push it (taking all of 3 mins to cross the square) only to be passed by numerous cyclists criss-crossing at speed travelling in all directions. I feel like the odd one out!

Is this sort of thing common elsewhere?

When it says "pedestrianised" is there still an okay for delivery vans and lorries etc?

I cycle through an area like this every day on my commute. The area is pedestrianised but there are always delivery vans and lorries so I don't get off and walk .... I do cycle very slowly and carefully through it though.

Not sure to be honest if this is legal or not? Seems strange that I would have to get off and push the bike but a lorry can come through?

Most of the pedestrian streets in Dublin are really busy, some you can't even walk down but yet quite regularly I'd see somebody on a bike sweeping down and somehow everybody moves natrually and there's no real problem. I wouldn't be able to do myself though, I'd either find an adjacent route which I could cycle or walk.

There must be access for refuse lorries and deliveries, because I see them a lot. I'll take an even closer look at the road sign - have been trying to remember exactly which of these it is - look towards the bottom of the page where the 'red circle' signs are (this is where I need a cameraphone!)-

Did see two cyclists riding down the hill into the ped area when they suddenly realised there were two police officers walking further in front of them - that was enough to make the cyclists dismount smartish and push their bikes, so I'm thinking there must be some restriction.

Have you got a cycling map?

In Birmingham, cycling is permitted in some of the pedestrian areas. And they're wide enough that it's generally do-able without conflict, as long as the joint respect is there..

Just checked on my Cycling Derby map - there's no route shown passing through that area. I'll have a good look at the signage again on my way home and post again.

In Cheltenham, there are cycle routes which run right through the pedestrian areas on the high st and also the promenade, but there are signs up asking cyclists to dismount in those areas. I must be one of the very few who actually take any notice of them.

Ok, been out for a look at lunch. It says...

"Pedestrian ZONE" with a red circle beneath then "No Vehicles 10am-5pm" and "Access Only outside these times"

... which realistically should mean no cycling, shouldn't it? Bin lorries and delivery trucks maybe. Cyclists? I don't see how! Not like a cyclist can claim he/she must ride their bike across the square rather then push it?

But the sign says "No Vehicles", not "No Motor Vehicles". Surely that's the difference?

Why would anybody want to cycle in a pedestrianised area ? It's bad enough trying to cycle where cyclists are explicitly allowed , like 'shared use paths'.
