Received an email today headed HM Revenue&customs that I am due a300pound rebate on overpaid tax.

They confirmed that this is a scam they would advise of any rebate due by letter not emal.

The email looks very convincing .There was an attachment for me to fill in my banking details .

The email has the HM Revenue logo. No doubt if I had accepted this as a legitimate contact my account would be empty by now .

i had visions of a new set of wheels.

I am not aware how wide spread this scam is so beware.

There are groups on the net who do scam the scammers. I joined in one once and received 100 US dollars to pay my airfare to Amsterdam where I was going to hand over several thousands of pounds to facilitate them getting money out of Uganda and into my bank. Needless to say I didn't go to Amsterdam and any attempt to trace me would come against a brick wall at the scam site. It was quite a done thing at one time although I suspect the Africans would have wised up to the scam the scammers schemes fairly quickly. I haven't looked at the sites for several years.

I have a friend who used to 'string them along' quite elaborately, then confuse them with obscure arrangements to meet.

It isn't a new scam and has been well publicised.
Quite frankly anyone who discloses their banking details in response to an email deserve to lose their money.
Not all people as savy about scams. When they see what appears to be a recognised logo they assume it is legit contact.
