I couldn't cycle any more, can't afford a car, don't trust buses. This just means we might have some more company when we're out and about. Perhaps getting more drivers out of their metal tins and onto two wheels, which would be better for everyone involved I think.

The majority of drivers will continue no matter what the price go's up to though,I agree we should start to see a few more cyclist's on the roads soon, mainly because of the better weather but some will be tempted out by this I'm sure.

To a point. £1.20 isn't enough to stop the majority of course, but I'll bet it curtails a lot of car trips for some people.

Nice to see my predictions were near enough the mark (although I didnt post them here, I think I posted on the Guardian site and the local paper). £1.20 isnt enough to stop daft car use, like the people you see who drive a mile or less.

I'm guessing if you look at interest rate and how they have behaved, and then look at the peak oil scenario its not unreasonable that the price of fuel could end up at £4-5 within 5-7 years.

i road past the petrol station this morning and saw the sigh saying £1.18.9 and couldn't believe it, i was sulking about it for the rest of the ride.

we have three young kids so it's not really possible to give up on the car, but i am going to try to cycle to work as much as i can now.

with all those people out of work and others struggling, we don't really need this right now. this country has been turned in to a "car culture" country over the last 30 years and now the government are penalising us without giving us a decent alternative, i think it's shocking.

I wish I could ditch the car but I have to go out with equipment to train at customer's premises. It is a vicious circle as, if my costs go up so do charges.

I normally average 10,000 miles per year in the car, last year was about 6,000,this year will be even less I'm guessing around 3-4,000.
So call it 6,000 miles saved at 50mpg that's approx £600 just in fuel I will save this year, that's a new bike:biggrin::biggrin:

I think thats a fair point a lot of people miss when promoting cycling. When I see a van go past I dont think about pollution, or "another car on the road" as a couple of workmates do. I just think he needs to lug his tools around. Or the peeps who say HGVs should be restricted to the midnight hour...

Anyway, just a side note really:smile:

and to add so do the road haulage prices and accordingly so do the prices in the shops.

Shop prices will go up unfortunately.

Wife does 25 miles or so a day, but in a 1.0 Yaris that does about 45-50 mpg....on average so it's not too bad..... My car is down to sub 3000 miles a year, (holidays, trips etc) and I only fill up maybe once every month, if that.

Had I still been commuting 60 miles a day by car, I'd be getting very skint......
