Do you have any real phobias that prevent you from doing something?

For instance I have been asked to take part in the Edinburgh to St Andrews ride next year. Love to, except I cannot walk / cycle over large bridges. Irrational I know I just cannot make myself do it.

Heights.

I'm terrified of heights. I would love to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower for example but no chance. I refuse to use lifts that you can see out of for example.

Snap...kind of. I get very bad vertigo sometimes, especially in tower-like structures and sometimes fall over because I'm so dizzy with it. Not pleasant but I've learnt to cope with it as, being into photography, some of the best views come from high places.

As for a proper phobia I imagine my fear of flying would probably qualify with ease!

I also suffer a little bit from Vertigo and I don't like it. I once had a friend that could not go outside without someone with her, not very nice for her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strangely enough, I love flying and have no problems with it.

i always said i'd never walk over the forth road bridge, as the path looks way too narrow. got talked into cycling over it, and it's actually quite wide enough to ignore the drop either side. i made a point of going faster than the posted 15mph limit (no peds around) to keep my focus off the height (which is my phobia).

I was always scared of heights, that's why I took up rock climbing. I'm still scared but I can control it: Vertigo is a different beast though.

Lucky bugger. Well, I don't seem to have any vertigo in an aeroplane...I just don't like the experience of flying in an existential way rather than the actual feeling of it. I tend to get very very nervous when in an airport and this can stop me getting on the plane.

Caving. Just the thought of it. Squeezing through places where you cannot turn around. I have had nightmares about it. It's not really a phobia though, it's a quite rational fear!
Maybe one of my forefathers was a miner and it's an atavistic fear.
