Not much of an expert on valves I'm afraid, but your volume switch sounds like it's full of crap. Get some switch cleaner solvent and give it a good squirt from behind (ooer)

I've never used a valve amp but know from my interest in Hi-Fi that valves do have a finite life and need replacing eventually. That might not be what the fault is but I'd be inclined to do that first and see what it does.
The valves should have markings on them that will help you search for them. Most types are still made new, somewhere in the world!

Valves don't last for ever, 10 years is a long time mind you this depends on useage.
