A nice simple tour would be along the Rhine. It should not work out too expensive as you could go via RyanAir to Friedrichshafen which is on the N shore of L Konstanz (the lake being effectively where the Rhine has flooded a huge hole in the ground) and go along the lake to where it narrows and then becomes the Rhine again. Then you just stay on the bike path until you reach the Hook of Holland and get a ferry home. If that is too far you could make Basel your startpoint and if that is too far then you could start at Frankfurt.
It's a good tour with loads of pretty towns and villages, decent food and great wine and beer all the way.

Lots of cyclists round here don't wear helmets and many of them have taken the stabilisers off their bikes. It simply isn't necessary.

Slowmotion (and me for that matter) have assumed that this was a troll.
As psmiffy says, if you fancy Italy go to Italy. There are lots and lots of options. There are loads of great little small towns to visit in the central -northern plain - but the landscape is pretty flat so probably not athletic enough. Or you could consider the Via Claudia Augusta which runs through the Dolomites down to Padova/Venice, of Trento/Verona. The route is well signposted, very pretty and there's lots of information about accommodation. You could construct a triangular route flying into and out of Treviso. Alternatively, if you wanted to go somewhere a little bit off the beaten track check out Umbria as well as the website there's a very useful book - free from the regional tourist office.
Getting to Italy by plane is perfectly straightforward although you would probably need a bike bag (lots of threads about transporting bikes on planes). You could do it by train, but it's a wee bit more involved.

For a first tour, especially when you've not done much cycling before, I can highly recommend Holland.
Getting there is easy via an overnight ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland.
When you're there campsites are plentiful, the people are really friendly, and it's flat! As well as the big factor, Holland's cycle network is second to none, you'll barely be cycling on a road, you'll be on beautiful, smooth tarmac cycle paths the whole time.
Plus you can get a bit spliffed up if you go to the right places too
