Just saw that Puddles had posted that she bought a Dutchie. I've been looking for a bike for a while now and keep coming back to the Dutchie as I love the look of it. However I've not been able to find anything much in terms of reviews. Any chance you could let me know what you think of it? Is it built cheaply? Are the gears okay?

Do I need to get the spray plaster out?
@chessy2309 Big Bertha is lovely, the gears are wonderful on her I can now get up a hill I never could before it is very steep. She is the 8 Speed Chic. She is not cheaply built at all. the only thing I was disappointed with is the chain guard is plastic not metal, but the nice bike man pointed out to me that makes it easier for removal when you need to and metal would be a pain.

Also I am not at all good with bike mechanics and so in attempting the adjust the hub gears I managed to do all manner or weird stuff and also in putting it together I pinched the dynamo cable I am guessing it was me. Anyway Dutchie when I told them were more than wonderful in just sending out a new one for free when I said I wasn't sure if it was them or me. The after sales team is really responsive and brilliant

The mobile bike mechanic was very impressed with her and less impressed with my virgin attempt at putting her front wheel on and hub adjustment although he did say at least I had a go.

When they arrive you have the front wheel, handle bars & saddle to put on, plus sometimes they say the gears need minor adjustment after transport.

I love her she is so comfortable to ride, really solid build pulls the trailer with ease. If you have been on a different style the riding position feels a bit weird at first and I tended to over steer after my hybrid with straight bars. The brakes are so responsive even down a very steep cobbled hill.

The 8 gears are more than enough for me, this is a regular route for me with small people to the river and back I used to do quite a lot of getting off and pushing before I had Bertha now she sails up and down them with no issues.

Until July 2012 I had not been on a bike in a looooong time, I am not fit in anyway shape or form, I do not do anything vaguely sporty at all, I haul any manner of stuff on the bike, like 40 ears of corn with a large pumpkin, 1/2 sack potatoes etc in the trailer with a small child and then fill up my panniers with miscellaneous fruit and veg and she still rolls along beautifully. I do the school/pre-school run on the bike, I got to the local shops, the farm 3 miles up the road, the big supermarket 4 miles away, the local country park, the river, etc a I gave up my car when I got my first bike. I do not achieve 20 mph (only down hill) I plod along saying hello to the villagers and people I pass, I accompany User76 in the trailer singing, I enjoy the views, I am not into sweating nor pushing myself, so if I find Bertha a joy to ride feeling like queen of the road anyone can. I can honestly say since getting Bertha I feel like a child when riding filled with pure un-adulterated joy that I never got on my hybrid that was hard work and not always fun.

@Puddles thank you so much for the information!! I am originally from The Netherlands and always loved plodding along on my bike enjoying the views. When I moved I stupidly left my dutch bike behind as we were moving to an area with a few hills and I got a mountain bike. I hate it! I have never had to work so hard on a bike before in my life!! I now want to go back to my old dutch bike but couldn't find anything locally which is when I came across the Dutchie. You've helped me a lot and I think I will just go ahead and order it (and find my own 'nice bike man' to put it together!). Thanks again for replying. Much appreciated :-)

Find a really good lbs and make good friends with the owner and staff it's a sound investment of time. maybe post your town village and somebody might recommend someone.

My lbs is 1 mile away but the owner is unhelpful only services bikes he has sold and only sells Claude butler the other one in town is no better but is Merida only and not much better I use a shop 10 miles away and they are great.
