Ha...

The chimney sweep who came to brush out my parent's chimney rode round with his rods, brushes and bags of soot.

His name was Jones too.... spooky.

Just like the old days! :becool: Havent seen a window cleaner using bike for a while either come to think of it
Nowdays due to legislation window cleaners are not supposed to climb ladders they have to have a really long handled brush device with a hose attatched which needs a jet washer of some sort to provide the pressure and a water tank. This means they really need to use a van to carry all the gear they need .
The days of a guy with a ladder and a bucket are gone i am afraid

When I lived in a council house in Sudbury, Suffolk, the council plumber had an old post office bike and went all round on it with his gas cyclinder and tools in the basket.

We also used to have a knife sharpener and his wife who travelled a circuit on their bikes, visiting every 3 months or so. His bike had the grinding wheel turned by peddling. He did a good job on garden shears and scissors.

My Dad used a bike for his plumbing business in the 80's because he never learn't to drive ! He made a rack out of flat bar, built a wooden box so he could carry his gas bottle and tools on the back and strapped copper pipe to the cross bar ! Cannot remember what bike he had and i wish i had kept it when he died ( natural causes, not cycle related ! ) but it had 3 speed Sturmy Archers gears,up-turned racer bars ,good old 26 x 1 3/4 wheels and dynomo front hub. Everyone knew his bike just because of the way it was, never knew he was so far ahead of everyone !!!

Good for him!

Not sure about 'purpose built' though. It's an X-tracycle bolted onto something. Yeah, he built it up for his purposes, but it's all off the shelf stuff.

(Not to denigrate him, but the standard of journalism).

I think Norman Wisdom as his screen character Pitkin when he was window cleaning carried a long ladder and bucket on his bike with disastrous results ................. .

There's a window cleaner in Hornsea who uses a bicycle with a kind of 'side car' fitted to hold his ladders. Guess he's not done a risk assessment

There's a window cleaner I've seen around Edinburgh who has a trailer with his bucket of water on it sploshing around. I think he mainly does shop fronts, so just uses a pole to get to the top.
