Hi All,

When busy in the garden at the weekend, I like to listen to the football - the DAB radio that I have inside the house, enables me to pick up all manner of local radio stations throughout the UK.

Can anyone recommend a small portable radio, that I could use outside and could pick up a similar range of stations ?

I'd like a smallish radio, something of this kind of size :

Should I be looking for a 'world receiver' ? Does such a radio pick up a better signal ?

If anyone could suggest something that might meet my needs, please let me know . . . . . . . if you've got such a device that you'd like to sell, also let me know.

Thank you.

I think the term "world receiver" refers to a radio with SW (short wave) capability. You are looking for a portable DAB radio.

Thank you for clarifying that :okay: - I wasn't aware that world receivers were SW.

Any other recommendations ?

At the moment, this one suggested by @steve50 looks a decent prospect :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Akai-DAB-Digital-Radio/191946510352?_trksid=p2045573.c100506.m3226&_trkparms=aid=555014&algo=PL.DEFAULT&ao=1&asc=20151005190705&meid=0d78aeb54c1d4f3b83da0091d82b96e2&pid=100506&rk=1&rkt=1&

. . . . . . though I wouldn't mind something a little larger - with twin (stereo) speakers - I'm getting to be a deaf auld b@st@rd , so it'll need to have decent volume.

I have a portable Bluetooth speaker (ue boom) which has amazing sound and play from my phone to it. I have various wifi extenders in my house which covers enough of the garden to stream to my phone and play on the speaker.

Does it absolutely have to be a DAB one?

[/QUOTE]

I think so . . . . . . . we have a mains-powered DAB radio in the house and I like the fact that although I live in Shropshire, I can pick up stations such as Radio Leeds (FM). I'd likely to have the same facility - to get such 'remote' radio stations from a portable radio.

I listen to FM radio in the garden on a knackered old ghetto blaster whose cassette decks don't work. It's certainly loud enough, and the sound's much better than a titchy tranny.

I agree with you, I listen to Radio 5, on a Bush TR112 'handbag' radio that I picked up for a few quid from a car boot. The sound is excellent, in terms of quality and volume.

Like myself , my TR112 is a product of the 1960s, shabby and rather 'unfashionable' - but it works.

Can you download a radio station app such as http://tunein.com/ to your phone or a tablet?

A good idea, but my cr@ppy hearing means that I require something which provides rather greater volume.

IMHO you can't beat a Roberts DAB radio.

Solar DAB is cool because it keeps the battery topped up by sunlight (and since you're outside that's going to work quite well).
The "Splash" is waterproof which could also be a nice feature outside
For ultra-portability there is SportsDAB

I have three Roberts DAB radios and recommend them highly.

Here for rides.
I've got a Roberts Internet Streaming Radio. A Stream 93i. It does DAB and FM as well as the interwebs. And Spotify. You can buy (a butt ugly) add-on battery pack for it to make it portable. Clearly the "radio" was designed by a designer and the battery pack was just manufactured. I just generally plug it into an extension lead or socket in the jardin when I want sip a Boulevardier whilst listening to a beat combo or two al fresco

If it's just for the garden, I use a little veho short-range transmitter plugged into the headphone socket to rebroadcast the house radio on an empty FM frequency.

I have also shoved a USB power pack into my Pure Siesta mi DAB radio's USB mini input before. At full volume (good enough for most gardens), it consumes 0.2A at 5v so most power packs should be good for many hours.

I use wireless head phones, the base unit is plugged into the laptop, the laptop stays in the living room, I'm in the garden.
I got mine about 5 years ago from Aldi, I think, they have a range of more than 10 meters, brilliant sound even with the hedge trimmer on.
You search for any broadcasting station, they also stream on line, you can listen to Spotify, your music on hard drive or on the cloud.
You can also hook the headphones up to any device that takes headphones, like a stereo or a mobile phone, they come with two jack adapters ... I think this is the right term.
