Just a bit of a vent . . .hit a pothole on this morning on Byward Street eastbound (just opposite Tower of London). I came off the bike right in the middle of the traffic. road rash and thankfully no car up my backside. I have seen two others on the this same stretch of road come off their bikes due to a pothole on the other side of the street (westbound) . . .dangerous stretch of road. Thankful for my helmet. Question . . .will these holes get fixed (how many have to fall off before this happens?) and what was the website that I need to update (pothole themed)?

I've had a good response from the ones I've reported around Camden and Islington.

Although now we're heading in towards the cooler weather the situation can only get worse once more. They'll probably do a temp patch fix on them so that they deteriorate within a month and become a problem once more.

Important point:

If someone else had reported this pothole, the highway authority responsible is liable for any reasonably foreseeable consequences it causes. The may be liable even if no-one had reported it, but they could reasonably be expected to have known about it (schedule of inspections etc). In London, the second point probably applies (someone legal will be along in a minute to advise).

So if your bike or clothing or anything else were damaged as a result of this off, send in a claim to the council. They might pay it. If they don't, it'll still concentrate their minds on getting the hole fixed.

+1

Check if its been reported by someone else (fillthathole, fixmystreet). If so, claim.

If not, there is a chance someone might have reported via phone, but im sure you're council won't make it easy for you to find out if they have.

Someone mentioned it already but I used this site a couple of weeks ago and got good results.

I reported a section at the top of my road where there were potholes and cracks right across the road and speedbump. None of them were really deep but there were so many of them that it made pulling out of the junction a nuisance.

Anyway went on holiday for a week and when I came back not only had they filled most of the holes at the top of the road but they had also fixed some of the other speedbumps along the road as well.

You can report the size and depth of the holes, although admittedly some bureaucratic councils would like to use as the sole criteria whether to fill it or not. However on fillthathole you can also report what mode of transport you discovered it with and whether it caused you to have an accident. Since it caused you to come off your bike as well as two others I'm sure they would take it seriously if you reported it.

Ugh!!!!...I hit a pothole (both wheels) yesterday in Walthamstow while drafting a bus on the fixie.....

Never noticed it before as I don't generally ride in the middle of the road....

Drafting buses has been the cause of nearly all my near-accidents - usually when I fail to notice a speedbump or pothole. Fortunately haven't come off yet but have been thrown onto the crossbar a few times.

I really should learn my lesson but it's just so tempting to get a free tow, especially from double deckers...

as a cyclist and as i work for the local authority fixing potholes, my best advive is to complain, take photo's of pothole and of bike and ruined clothes, make a note of times of complaint and who you spoke too, if no success, ring up again and tell them you are getting councillors involved, and if no success, finally threaten them with the local paper, but make sure you get times and names of who you spoke to on the council highways.

Update on my meeting with the pothole....For some reason I checked the wheels today and found the front tyre flat...I guess it must be a slow pinch P so I changed from the Kenda Tyre and basic inner tube which were fitted into that wheel which came with the bike...It's done 850 miles and there isn't too many scratches on the tyre...Fitted my thicker inner tube and an armadillo I had knocking around....Does that count as a P as I got home on it no probs?
