There's another thread on here about the dangers of getting hit by debris thrown up from cars ...

But does your bike throw up debris? My road bike does!

When I ride over a stone on my road bike at speed, it can often be propelled sideways with considerable force (presumably by being "popped" out from under the tyre). Quite often I will be riding along, feel a little bump under my wheel and almost immediately hear a loud BANG as the pebble whacks into a shop-front or similar.

I would hate to hit a pedestrian like that.

Yep, a bit of loose grit can be spit out. I've never really thought about it to be honest.

Couple of weekends ago was riding alongside Mista Preston from this forum when I 'dinged' a stone right into his spokes...

The stones coming out from under the tyre are moving fast and would hurt if they hit anyone, the only good thing is they usually stay fairly low down so would not hit eyes or face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Gaz's post.....

Last week, pulled away from lights, and ran over a twig, it unfortunately caught the tyre, whipped up and pulled the mudguard stays out of the 'safety clips'......scratched my new bike...boo hoo..... so that's why these safety clips are fitted..... especially on road frames......good design.... stopped me going head over butt.........

I can ( i think its that my tyres have worn enough to do it) fire stones out the front of my mudguard, i'm working on aiming it at car tail lights ;)

millie's bike is worse for it due to the 3mm mudguard clearance

I frequently hear the ping as a stone is flung sidewards - and as I could be with my kids I worry a little but so far they haven't been hit by one.

I had that happen once but it didn't have the quick release fixings. I was doing about 15mph along a smooth muddy track at the time when suddenly the front wheel locked up! The entire rear section of the front mudguard had rolled up under itself and pointed forwards. Even the metal L-shaped mounting bracket was pointing the wrong way - how it didn't go through the tyre I don't know. Lucky it was muddy as it allowed the bike to skid to a halt instead of throwing me over the handlebars.

We have had them bouncing around in the group before:eek: Here them pop out, hit a bike, then bounce off and hit another.
I had a car come past me close one time, and just as it came past i moved over and got a stone(didnt see it) and heard a bang:laugh::tongue:
Shot a stone straight at the car that past me close.
