On checking my bike at home I found my rear tyre was flat, looking at the tyre I couldn't see any problems. I took the tyre off and the tube had a large hole caused by the failure of the rim tape over one of the holes above a spoke nipple (semi aero style rims). The rim tape and tube were well bulged over every hole.

I'm glad it didn't fail miles from home as I don't think I could patch the tube, and even a new tube might not have got me home. 2 new rim tapes and tubes for me, hopefully the new tape will be made of sterner stuff !!

Sounds like they have used over-long spokes for the wheel - two rim tapes might not be enough as the ends of spokes can be a bit sharp.

No, the spoke ends and nipples are very well recessed with the rims being deep section ones
