Crossword solvers' most elegant and worthy foe has died. I know crosswords aren't everybody's 3,2,3 but I've spent many hours struggling with him.

Not to mention those big brutes at Christmas.http://www.theguardian.com/crosswor...zles?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
An appreciation from the current crossword ed. Most deaths of famous people pass me by, but not this one. Bank holiday weekends will never be the same again.
Very good. The co-writer John Perkin's own obit appeared in the paper 11 years ago I see. He was the Guardian's former crossword editor. What a fine obit.
Having said that, the late summer double (river themed) was a sensationally good one, worthy of the great man. It was set by Masquerade IIRC, which may have been an amalgam.http://www.theguardian.com/crosswor...zles?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews

Agreed - and the alphabetical jigsaw that someone else set over the summer was also a fine one. My only regret is that the clues didn't rhyme, but even Araucaria stopped using rhyming couplets for his alphabeticals a few years ago.Having said that, the late summer double (river themed) was a sensationally good one, worthy of the great man.
