Question for Londoners - what's London Waterloo like

A while ago i asked for advice about stopping in a travel inn type hotel in London and was offered quite abit of advice.

Tonight after searching the net i came across this offer for the travelodge chain in London's Waterloo area.

What i'd like to know is if this area of london is suitable for taking a family to? The room rate is very cheap compared to other travel inns in London (about £40 a night cheaper) and the hotel is just near to the Elephant and Castle tube station which sounds ideal.

If this turned out to be a bad idea then we'd probably go for a travel inn on city road

Any comments would be most welcome!!

It will be perfect for a visit to London. Few minutes walk to the Imperial War Museum for a start (if that takes your fancy), The Old Vic and the River Thames. Both Lambeth and E&C stations will get you in the West End in minutes if you don't want to walk.

And just up Waterloo Road is a great Indian restaurant called the Thames Tandoori...

If its a good enough deal book it immediately if not sooner. You will be hard pressed to find a better location to explore London IMHO. As far as your concerns go (I assume you fear the area may be crime ridden or filthy) its a perfectly normal part of London. It might not be Knightsbridge but it aint Newham either. And if you fancy fish and chips try the fishcotheque on Waterloo road opposite the tube stn it might be a lousy name but pretty good food. Have an enjoyable stay.

Waterloo Road isn't particularly pleasant, but it is a short walk away from the South Bank, the Hungerford Bridge, and the Wheel. You could easily walk to Theatreland. If you could get a room on the side street it would be a bit quieter. If you could get a room on the top floor you might have a view of the Wheel, which would be nice.

That is an absolute steal, book it. It won't be on tree-lined avenues, and the environs will not be picturesque, but it is perfectly safe, and a very short walk to all kinds of good places to visit. Bargain.

that was my concern - yes. the only two cities i do know both have areas that i wouldn't want to stay in.

Thanks for the comments. The only other reservation i do have is that it isn't BUILT yet! It's due to be completed by 1st july and so a visit one month after that should be safe i guess. I just don't want a call in June saying it's been delayed (and many other hotels are booked up by then!!!)
