Both of my daughters are in their early 20s, and haven’t really been on bikes since primary school.

A week or so ago, daughter #1 said she was thinking about getting a bike, and could she try my old one? It would have been far too big for her, so I suggested the local bike charity place. Get a basic bike, try it for a bit, if you like it, we can get something better.

She went along. They had a selection of bikes that had been salvaged and put through the workshop; 30 quid. She’s now been exploring the paths and side streets around her flat.

Then daughter #2 said the same. This time it was Gumtree - £35 for a Raleigh Atlanta. Far from new, not exactly lightweight, but looks fine and rides well.

Daughter #2 says tonight “Dad, can we go out for a ride”. A couple of local streets, the path through the park. Showed her the basics of the gears. Another side street, another park, down to the seafront. Along the prom, then back through side streets to home. About 5k in total.

Then daughter #1 arrived - had cycled about 10k from her flat to our house.

Quite a nice feeling.

Brilliant stories  very heart warming.

Mini-KB and me frequently spend a day out together with the trailer. The better you can get your kids to understand that bikes are the normal, human way to travel the better.

Going off topic slightly,a handyman came round the other day to do some odd jobs for me. Oh i see you have a bike, he said. I asked if he had one. He replied that he'd never even ridden one never mind owned one. Imagine someone has never ridden a bike. Weirdo!
