I had a Uni colleague who trained as a vet who told me a funny* thing about flat faced big eyed dogs. They have very shallow eye sockets, and you have to be careful how you pick them up if you go for the scruff of the neck.

*not so funny really, for the poor dog. Also embarrassing for the vet, when Froufrou goes in to have her toenails clipped and comes out with an eyepatch.

Other things I learned from him are that birds often don't show signs of illness until they are actually at deaths door, and the act of getting one out of it's cage is often enough to finish it off, and that the words a vet dreads most are a tearful child with a shoebox asking "can you tell me what's wrong with Hammy?" because it's highly likely the minute they put their hand in the box, the hamster will latch on to a finger, and stay connected as the vet pulls a hand out sharpish, only letting go in time to arc across the room and hit the wall...

:ohmy:If any vet picked mine up by the scruff of her neck they would be needing medical attention themselves:boxing:
Every working dog I know is handled by picking up by the scruff, front, and loose skin over the loins at the rear. As long as the dog is accustomed to this it doesn't cause them any pain or distress, and is far better for a dog that has to be lifted over a fence or into the back of a vehicle than any other method.
