The De-Railing of Transport 2010
Monday 18 January 8 - 8:30pm BBC Radio 4

In the 1990s, a new way of thinking about transport emerged. Sustainability became the buzz word, advocates of a so-called New Realism had the ear of government and a ten-year plan was hatched. But many of its ideas got no further than Whitehall.

The current problems on the rails stem from Beeching's ruthless report in teh 1960s advocating systematic sidelining and deconstruction of the railways in favour of the car which is now ancient history, nearly as ancient of some of the rolling stock, but unfortuntately whose thinking still under pins transport policy, that the train is inferior to the car and the plane and even more fuss than the bus .

OK, so he screwed up a major part of the country by simply doing his job, following ill-considered advice derived from a short-sighted approach.

However, it has been over 40 years, surely we can give the man some slack, and hold those in power accountable for the progress.

Trouble is the Conservatives even into the 1990s based their transport policy on Beeching by investing massively in the road network at the expense of rail.

Give Beeching a break? No way! This guy was instrumental in creating the Carmageddon we are now suffering under.
