Raleigh SP Comp 2012 or something else

Hi all

Im looking at upgrading my hybrid to something a bit more suited to only the road and have been offered a Raleigh SP Comp 2012 from a mate. Its only done a couple of hundred miles, has the 105 groupset on it and looks in good nick. £650 is what he's asking for it. Looks like a relatively good price as i know that it's not been in any prangs and has been well looked after. My original budget is £1000 and obviously this would save me a lot of money.

Is this bike any good, cant find too many reviews on it and all i seem to find elsewhere is raleigh bashing.

I intend to use the bike for leisure riding of 30-60 miles and some sportives.

Thanks

Mark

Personally love the Raleigh road bikes.

Its what I used to race on. Raleigh RC 3000-6000.

I would get it. Where is the advert? Because if you don't. I will

No advert ;) Just a mate selling it cos he found it a bit too big for him and after keeping it as n+1 for a while has decided to sell it on. It's a 54cm frame and im 6ft with an inside leg of 33inches/84 cm.

What i really want to know is if the £350 difference between this and the Boardman team carbon is sufficient enough to make this the better option. Theres potential for a lot of extras with that £350 saved.

Definitely better spec, nicer groupset and wheels. The raleigh looks a bit more race focussed rather than comfort though, and I would think that 54cm is probably on the small side for your height (I'm 6' and ride 56/58cm frames), so I think you should ask for a test ride to make sure you're comfortable with the size and ride. Especially with a smallish frame, you might find the head-down riding position a bit of a shock after riding a hybrid.

New Mid > Higher end Raleighs have a pretty decent rep these days (especially in the cycling press) so no worries there.

Check the geometry for that frame size though at 6 ft with 33" leg you are exactly same measurements as myself & I ride a large 56 Sintesi but a M/L Giant or 58 size Cube, they all measure frames differently.

I think Raleigh might measure 54 as a Medium or Large (very compact).

I was probably wrong there on the Raleigh geometry.

A quick google threw up 54cm seat tube to 54cm effective top tube, giving a plain old vanilla 54 cm size bike, which you might find very compact, possibly uncomfortable.

Hmm if you are 4 inches taller, it may be too small, a longer stem might help. I am just under 5'10 and ride 54cm frames but my proportions will be different being female

You guys all ride bikes way too big for you IMO.

I'm 5"9 and a 54 is near crippling even with an 80 stem. Can't get bar to seat drop and the reach is just too long.

When I had the recent Retul fit, the guy originally said he might have had me on a 56cm frame. After doing the fit and making the adjustments, he was happy that the 54cm was the right size with the 100mm stem flipped and 38cm bars. I am just under 5'10 but 34" inside leg

I like/need an upright position so all should be good once I am over my current injuries/ails
