Today marks the start of the Islamic month of Ramadan when Musilms are forbidden from eating anything between sunrise and sunset.

Does anybody know how this would be applied to northern Sweden? In some places like Kiruna the sun doesn't set at all during June or July.

Perhaps that's also why there is no mention of Islamic names in the annals of arctic exploration.

Ha ha! Actually I asked my Sudanese visitors this very question last week and they had already thought about it - they agreed that northern England was bad enough but Scandinavia must be terrible. One of them went back to Khartoum on Saturday as he has two wives competing to feed him - he also took a Decathlon exercise bike with him in the hope of dealing with his growing tummy!

From what I gather, if you live in such a place, you're allowed to follow the sunrise/sunset times of a neighbouring country or that of the Saudi Barbarians.

Wish me luck. I'm not commuting on the bike for the next month.
Good luck, but are you not also usually allowed an exception if you're traveling?
You're right. The exemption is travelling something like 100 miles or longer distances e.g. travelling overseas. So my 13-mile commute is not quite in the same category.

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but why can't you commute?

I may be wrong, but I think it's just because people don't feel up to the exersize when they've been fasting.

A lot of my Muslim colleagues opt to do nightshifts during ramadan and spend the night scranning!
