This morning I had a lovely ride to work via the new university campus, 5 miles in (of 6 total) there's a set of traffic lights that doesn't change for cyclists, no matter whether you're on your own or the roads perpendicular to you are filled, they will not change, so there's no choice but to use the shared cycle path that runs alongside it.
Anyway went up onto the shared path at 10mph, not a soul between myself and the end where you're meant to go on the road, and as of yet no cars following so I pick up the pace. went down the drop kerb at 20mph straight into a huge pothole. That's right, the pothole fairy attacked.
Luckily I saw it in time to shift my weight backwards, so I didn't end up faceplanting, unfortunately because all the weight was at the back the rear innertube took the brunt of it and exploded, meaning I had to walk the other mile to work.
At work people just generally seemed in an arsey mood, waved to bus drivers as they came in and out of the uni campus and in 5 hours (making 60 passing drivers) less than a dozen waved back, whereas it's usually 50 or so of them. Customers seemed to be in a worse mood than usual
Swapped the innertube out on the way out (as you can imagine the hole was huge), pumped it back up and went on my way... To be greeted by the most ignorant, rude and dangerous commute I've ever done.
20mph average speed and yet people still feel the need to overtake in a 30 zone coming up to red lights, repeatedly. Heading down a 40mph dual carriageway in primary and people still insist they can't go into the other lane to go past me and coming down Lord Mayor's Walk traffic was queued about halfway down. I started filtering and someone decides to pull out to turn right without indicating, and got my seal of approval.
Further down the lights changed and the traffic started moving, I moved in and into primary to turn the corner, primary down to the end of the line of traffic (coincidentally where the entrance is to the coach park) on Clarence Street where people can overtake safely and some numpty in an Astra following decides it's a good idea to still give me a foot of room, even with the entire other lane free.
I gave chase (though it took me until after the hospital to catch him) and told him if he came that close again I'd report him to the DVLA. Granted it was harsh looking back on it, but I was in a bad mood at the time.
Sorry for the rant, just had to get that out of my system.
