She is moving up to the big chainring isn't she? Also what do you mean by "spinning out" uphill?
She is peddling like the clappers and going nowhere

Well she is clearly not in the 50/12 when she is peddling like the clappers and going nowhere.,. Impossible. She must be in the 34 at the front.

Right I am confused are you talking about going uphill, downhill or on the flat and what gear are you referring to when this happens? My head is hurting understanding this.

Thanks all just been out and swapped bikes we done a couple of 6% hills around here and she found the gearing more suited to her on the 11-32 rear

The problem is that neither of you really understands how your gears work. Your mrs has a wide range of gears to cover what she is doing with you, but she is not in the right gear going uphill. On the flat, the problem could be gear selection, or lack of fitness, or both!
Wot said.

It would take a damn good rider to spin out on 50/12 unless they were going downhill.

Assuming reasonable fitness, 34/32 seems unnecessary for a 6% hill.

ETA: Especially so if 34/30 was too low. Wasn't that the problem?

Still, if she's happier that way...
