As long as I breathe, I attack.
The rear mech on my carrera is dieing, the rivets hodling it together are loose enough to allow excessive play in the jockey wheel cage which means the mech is not indexing properly .
Its an 8 speed shimano compatible mech but i have read any speed will do ?

Most rear deraileurs daraliours drailiors mechs will say what speed cassettes they're compatible with. I use this one on an 8 speed but as you can see it'll work on 9 or 10 speed also. The indexing (space between gear settings at the rear cassette are determine by the shifters not the derailleur).
The only issue I could see is if the rear cage is specifically for a 10 speed chain it might not run too well with an 8 speed one (it's wider).
This is the only one I've tried so hopefully someone can confirm for specific models.

Just one last thing - make sure you get a derailleur with the correct cage length (most come in different lengths depending on the cogs you're using front and back). Generally speaking the greater the difference between your smallest gear (Small cog front and small cog back) and your biggest gear (large cog front and large cog back) the longer the cage needs to be in order to keep tension on the chain throughout the full range. If you've got three cogs on the front you'll generally need a bigger cage than a double.

I can relate to all this, although in my case she never came back.
