Ok, follow on question to my one about QR. I have a 36h Mavic Open Pro rim in very good condition. I want to put that on to a single speed rear hub. Now unless I'm looking in the wrong places, it doesn't seem possible to meet two simple criteria:

1. less than £50
2. No stupid huge flanges on it. I want a simple hub similar looking to a 105 hub but without all the gubbins for sticking a cassette onto (obviously).

Any ideas?

You should be able to buy a complete rear wheel for less than £50

No idea if the above are a good place to buy from, but the price is right!

Thanks. Close but fails point 2 (are they called flanges? Where the spokes attach to.) I just want a normal looking wheel. However if all else fails I've got a starting point that is better than the wheel I have at the mo.

What are you planning to fit to this hub, a singlespeed freewheel or a cog?
Single speed freewheel (I assume by cog, you mean fixed). It's for my commuter bike which to be honest isn't an expensive bike but is quite comfy and everything else seems ok but the wheels are rubbish. I have the Mavic rim kicking around from my old commuter and I've been holding on to it in case I need a spare for Lelly but I think needs must now.

The more I think about it, despite the flanges, I may just buy the Raleigh one it looks like it will do the job.

Is it just a rim or built into a wheel? If the latter, you could put a single cog into the freehub with spacers.
At the moment it's built into a full 105 wheel with cassette but my understanding (limited I admit) is that the drop outs on my single speed will be a lot less than on either the Giant or Lelly?

It's a 120,

The more I think about it the more confused I get. At the moment, the wheel as it stands is worth more than I paid for the commuting bike. However the wheels on the commuter (deep section rims etc) feel like they are made of tin and the noise from them is getting on my nerves. So my thinking is £50 hub+decent hub+LBS build = peace, quiet and a really nice commute.

Sensible thing done. Existing geared wheel taken to LBS. Instructions given as to what I'd like. Purchasing is now his problem (although he will naturally charge me for it!!)
