REAR HUB

I have recently noticed that there is a very small amount of side-to-side movement in the rear hub axle when the bike is turned upside down and the rear wheel manipulated laterally. There is no similar movement to the front hub.

just wondering of this is supposed to be the case or that the hubs just need tightening?

I have never worked on adjusting hubs and the wheel has open bearings [not cartridge type]

It does indeed sound like the cones need adjusting.

Try tightening the skewer a tad - it usually gets rid of small amounts of play.
