Recommend me a budget tablet

I'm after a budget tablet, just for use for listening to podcasts on headphones while ironing, checking the forecast over breakfast, checking the sports results on a Saturday night, that kind of thing.

No bells and whistles required, I just want something that doesn't cost much but will last a few years (we were given a secondhand one last year but it packed in and refused to charge after just a few months of light use; I've heard similar stories from other people who've had tablets that have only lasted a year or two.)

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I bought a couple of cheap Lenovo tablets for the kids from Argos @ £50 each. They are ok but the screens are dull and processor rather slow, if you can put up with that they’re fine. Current popular budget recommendation is the Kindle fire which is hard to beat and might suit you better. You pay a bit extra for the version without the annoying Amazon ads.

Bought my son a Fire tablet last year and its a great bit of kit for the £40 it cost. Only downside was no Google play store installed but that can be added manually if you know anyone with technical knowhow.

Just use your phone? (Assuming that you have a smartphone.)
+1. A tablet's just a smartphone with a large screen and no phoning capability.

...can all be done equally easily on even a basic smartphone, without the bulk.

As Ian says, normally tablets just use a normal wi-fi connection.

Some tablets also have SIM sockets so you could use a mobile data connection on them if you needed to. Alternatively, many smartphones can act as wi-fi hotspots so you could possible piggyback off your phone data signal that way.

The 10 inch Lenovos are ok for £100. Battery life is fairly poor if you're watching videos all the time and playing games, but for audio they will last longer. Only thing with the Amazon one is, just check that all the apps you want are on the Amazon store (as they are obviously not as many as on Android).
