As per title can you recommend me a heart rate monitor for sensible money please.

I am planning to so some interval training this year along side my normal base training to up my average speed and power for a planned race season next year starting in April.

Ideal I would like it with a bike mount and be able to set the heart rate zones to suit me.

TIA

Neil

I think there were some available in Lidl or Aldi recently? Might still be some left.

I bought one of these a few days ago for about £35 . The wireless link from the chest strap gizmo doesn't interfere with my CatEye Strada Wireless, and the chest strap is so comfortable that you forget it's there. You can set your upper and lower heart rate and it beeps at you if you trespass. Not sure about a bike mount, but the rubbery strap should be able to be gaffer taped of something.

It might be an opportunity to get yourself Garmin - you know you really want to!

I bought an Edge 500, without the extras and have added in the cadence sensor, with the intention of adding a HRM later.

However, if you don't want to make that purchase, the reason I haven't bought one yet is that I have a basic Polar wristwatch based one, and it's just so damn reliable. My one was only about 25 quid, you can set one zone, it only stores one ride, but it has worked 2-3 times a week for over a year. I can also use the strap in the gym and the equipment there picks up the signal.

Yes your right I do really want one but I would like an Edge 800 if I was allowed to spend the money, due to the mapping. I do have a habit of getting lost when out on a random ride .

I love the price of the Polar ones but don't want a watch based one.

I use a £20 special from Sports Direct. It's a Karrimor one and has served me well for a fair few months of virtually daily use. No sign of the batteries fading yet. Alternatively, Polar FT4 are very well regarded and not super expensive.

mine ( Bryton) goes bonkers every now and again, it's a sign it needs a new battery. Manual says it lasts 35 hours of being synced. Not all that long really.

why wait until next year? There's nothing to stop you from racing right now. You may or may not have the fitness, but two things:

1 - you won't know if you don't try
2 - after your first race, you will have a clearer idea of the areas you need to improve on

There's no point doing intervals now if you don't plan on racing this year. A lot of riders only start bringing speed work into their training around this time of year anyway. Start racing now - it's the best 'training' you can do...

I will second and third blacknyellow. I procastinated - nervousness/fear/felt I wan't quick enough etc etc. I wished I had started earlier. I am time trialling not road racing but now i've done an event I know exactly the areas I need to concentrate on and can build a plan around that. Whilst you can have an idea of the areas to train around, you can only truly know whats needs to be done when you actually do it.
