It's old, battered & out of date!

Given that the roads in france had changed a fair bit last time we went over, I think it's time for an update.

I do have a smartphone but 1) the data charges & 2) the size of the screen make it a no-go.

Having used a number of sat navs back to back while doing tech support around London (bizarely based in Birmingham) my favorite sat nav was the tom tom, after using the tom tom the garmin felt a bit clunky and the michelin navistar was awful, it'd tell you which exit to take on the roundabout just as you were going past it

Vauxhall's built in one was a junction behind in built up areas.

basically, go with well established brands, allow some adjustment time when switching between manufacturers as menu systems take a bit of getting used to.

The French seem to be able to build roads over night! We were in the Alps this time last year, and no problems, we're here again now and there was one point where we were driving across (according to Sat Nav) open fields on Sunday! So yes, keep your software up to date (not like me ;) ).

Garmins tend to have a better reputation for reliability out of the box.
I have a Garmin - never any trouble. Mum has a Tom Tom. Had lots of problems with it and the replacement.

Tom Tom widescreen model with lane assistance - brilliant

I have Sat Nav options on my iPhone that work perfectly, and they do get used if I get caught out, but for dedicated journeys it's a stand alone Tom Tom unit for me everytime.

I have a Tomtom One which is still doing the business.

Absolutely fab and I don't go anywhere without it.

"Irish Shaun" has been my saviour on many occasions!!!!
