I took redundancy in 2008 aged 50yrs, started a small IT business in 2009, recession, tablets and smart phones came along and put an end to the business, we stumbled into fostering and have never looked back, I am my own boss, work from home and loving it.

consider starting a part time job now if you can get one so come march you will have some thing if you get your redundancy, before christmas theres usually some temporary jobs on offer even if they dont lead to a full time job offer it would look good on your cv, best time to look for a job is when you are in employment.
if you can time it right and with any luck you could walk out with some cash and straight or with a short break into another job just start looking now, good luck.

Even Montenegro can be chilly in March. My wife recently visited Slovenia and was very impressed. Good luck.

Am really enjoying myself, Mrs Steve is still working so I do all the stuff around the house and make sure the dogs get a good run out. I was off at the beginning of Aug so I had a great summer cycling, albeit fairly local, and started to run again (have dropped a fair bit of weight and am far fitter than I have been in ages).
I'm doing some volunteering, and I will probably go self employed next year to keep things ticking over.
As I mentioned, I hope to do some reasonable excursions next season, just need to avoid conflict with going self employed

Go for it OP. I sold a business, paid everything off and now work part-time, what was the point in working full time for longer? To buy more stuff? 
Best thing I ever did, I've since toured France, Spain, done the C2C and hope to do the USA too and its far more enjoyable without having a fixed timescale, to get back for work.
There is loads of "work" about if you don't mind low wages.

In a similar boat. I'm currently doing a weeks course in technical writing, in the hope of working from home, interspersed with 'have laptop - will travel' touring.
One of my greatest regrets
When I signed up for 22 years I was given 28 days "re-engaging leave"
The decision was to keep it for "emergencies"
Then when "Option for Change" came up, I took redundancy and applied for a couple of jobs.
The job I wanted came up and wanted an early start so the leave was taken up in aligning my leaving date with the job
I reminisce about just how much cycling I could have done in a month and the redundancy cash to finance it

You might like to consider starting in Athens and doing some thing similar to what Andrew Sykes (Across the med on a bike called Reggie) did and cycle along the Med, although i would start in mid may, what ever you do i will be extremely jealous ! i have a few more years to go

I've pretty much reached a position where I've got / had and got bored of, all the 'stuff' that I've had any real interest in. I very nearly just walked away from a stable job, and thought "sod it, I've had enough" and to be fair, that is still very much an option. I'm going to get Christmas out of the way, then I'll seriously consider bailing. As was said above, There's plenty of work out there, if your situation allows you to do part time ( relatively) low paid stuff, and you're not too fussy. I'd rather have more life, in my life / work balance.
