For an Audax of that distance I have a porridge breakfast about an hour before the start. I top up with bananas, jelly babies and malt loaf with plenty of fluids to remain hydrated. Depending on the weather I'd get through 3-6 litres of fluids. Sometimes I use PSP energy powders in the water sometimes I supplement the water with the occasional bottle of Lucozade. Dont't skimp on the calories.

100 miles is tough-ish. I struggled a bit on the Three Bridges 160km Audax a fortnight ago but it was a tad lumpy in places.

For the record, I got through 3 litres of PSP energy drink, four bananas a large bag of jelly babies, a Mars bar, a 500ml bottle of Lucozade and a Twix on the aforementioned Audax.

One thinhg I forgot to mention - the oft mentioned advice: 'Eat before you're hungry and drink before you're thirsty ' is very sound advice.

It depends on how much time you want to spend on the road. If in a hurry, the "refuelling" will probably not be the same as for someone like me who would be taking water and a few bananas, with stops for tea and cakes along the way and a substantial bar meal around 17.30.

I have my first 100 miler this weekend. As the others have said get fuelled up well before you set off, and then drink / eat in good time. Take it easy for your first time, no-one should expect you to perform miracles, just finish in one piece.

When I got used to riding 100 milers I found the need to eat roughly every 23miles or so. Don't ask me why it just worked out that way....Take on complex carbs (eg flapjack) earlier in the ride and as you get towards the end start eating simple sugars eg energy gels, jelly babies or HARIBO Tangfastics...as they will keep you topped up until you get back.

Incidentally SIS Smart gels make you go like a rocket.
