Use an extra lock, don't take any chances and if possible limit the time your bike spends on the street/in public - there's a whole gaggle of students about to start university in towns and cities all over the country and many of them are in the market for a cheap bike. The thieves oblige by nicking more bikes at this time of year than any other time (in university towns at least).

And, worse than that, the students will be wobbling along in gutters, locking their bikes to yours, going the wrong way down one way streets, and basically being objectionable asses. At least, thats how it works here in Cambridge. Oh, and that'll make Plod have their annual crackdown, when they stop you and ask you whether you've got cycle lights and why you're not using them, to which the answer is usually 'its half past three in the afternoon and it isn't dark, officer'.

Sadly, I know - got back from hols yesterday & tonight I had to go over the road to start housetraining the latest batch of student raahs to move in to the house opposite. Strangely, the lads always seem more amenable than the faux-blonde croaky voiced females shuffling around in Uggs etc.

PS If anyone lived anywhere near Cricklewood or West Hampstead bteween 1977-81, please accept my apologies.

And the kids are back this week. Back to dodging the 4x4s after dropping off Bolleta at school. Its video time!

I work at London University and I love it when the kids come back.

And Cab, Cambrige is like that all the time. There's always students there; out of term time it's language students, and during the hols there are also bike-hiring tourists.

It is, but make no mistake, the annual influx of newbie university students is still very, very evident on the roads.

I saw the foreign students this morning who, presumably, are 'early starters' getting a grasp of the cultural change of moving country before fresher's week totally dims their view of the UK

My commute takes me past streams of students every morning, although the distraction can be quite dangerous.

I find it most obvious at the Tesco enroute home, there's little or no chance of getting a cycle parking space.
It sometimes helps also that the critical mass of cyclists on road every day is more noticeable and from a selfish point of view some are often slow off the stop line blocking traffic, leaving a nice clear road for me.

True enough, but soon enough I'll be waiting at the front of the traffic, behind the white line, and a swarm of dreadful cyclists will be there in front of the white line in my way, all ove rthe place. A 'critical mass' of bad cyclists can be tiresome.

Well the students are back on campus - not a full compliment yet, but the bike racks are 'overflowing'

It's not good when you hear some scally Manc lad cycling past my window on the phone to someone saying "f'ing ell mate, it's like bike 'eaven 'ere" -the scally git is probably scouting the place....grrrrr.

Our staff lockers haven't arrived yet, and my bikes roughing it with the student ones, although the most securely locked one...might have to come and live inside for a wee while !!!
