replaced the chain on my recumbent and didn't pay attention to the direction the chain went round the chainring. the result was that i had to pedal backwards to make the bike go forwards and forwards to change gear.

Quite amusing, but i wondered would it be more efficient? at least you could change down a gear while stopped at a junction.

anybody else made this simple mistake.

P.S chain only lasted 1700miles is that bad for a recumbent

ACW, I got between 3000 and 4500 miles per chain (I'm on my fourth now). I found the KMC chains much better than the original SRAM one.

For the very first time ever I changed the cassette and chain on my commuter this afternoon. Cassette was very stubborn but taking off and fitting the new chain was quite straightforward. Bit of research on the hinterweb, the correct tools and a bit of patience; a step forward taken.

Fitted a KMC chain, or rather 3 of them. You forget how easy a new chain shifts and sounds
