I have a good Altura hi-vis jacket which seems to be failing to keep water out. I wash it by hand about every 2 months. Can it be reproofed and how?

I have an Altura Night Vision jacket & trousers, ordered some Grangers cleaner & proofer (not the all in one version) & after it going missing in the post, then being sent the wrong one I finally got the cleaner & proofer then the zip went on the jacket!

To cut a long story short, water on the trousers doesn't bead & I'm not convinced they are as waterproof as they could be & wish I had used NikWax. I only used Grangers as Altura recommended it.

Part of the problem is tumble drying - often the NikWax (and others) benefit from a tumble dry to reactivate the proofing. Altura says their jackets can't be tumble dried.

+1 for NikWax - I use it on my Paramo gear.

The TechWash/LoftWash at 40 degrees to wash it properly, and then a wash at 40 with TX Direct Wash-in after every 4-6 Techwashes to reproof it.

I had same issue with altura Nevis jacket. Tried nikwax spray but no good. With grangers 30 degree proofer, washed first in soap flakes. This is crucial as any other type of detergent stops the proofer from working. Washed in the proofer then tumble dried on low heat which didn't seem to harm the jacket, and did make thr proofer work better. It's only lasted 4-5 months tho so not sure it's a permanant solution

I always wash from new in the machine with TX10 - no detergent - and once they start not to shed then a silicon spray when they are dry - my Jackets last for years and generally only get replaced because they are getting thin and tatty from day to day wear or the odd tumble
