Hello all.

I am a post-doctoral researcher at Loughborough University. We are currently conducting a research study examining whether regular training with high carbohydrate beverages improves the rate of gastric emptying and increases the ability of the body to use external sources of carbohydrates.

We are seeking male volunteers between the ages of 18-45 to take part in this study. At the end volunteers are provided with £300 to cover time and expenses, as well as the option to return to the labs for some free physiological assessments at a time of their choosing.

Requirements
visit 1: Preliminary assessments of VO2max and a depletion ride. Total time approx.. 3 hrs, beginning in the morning, following an overnight fast.
visit 2: Practice ride at the intensity required for the study and introduction to the venous cannula and gastric tube (a small tube that is swallowed and sits in the stomach for 2 of the exercise sessions). Cycle for 100mins at 50% of VO2max. Total time approx.. 3 hrs
Visit 3: As above, with the gastric tube in for the duration of the ride, and drinking a high carbohydrate content drink at 20 minute intervals. Total time approx. 3 hrs
Visit 4 - 16. 12 training sessions over 4 weeks. Ideally Mon, Weds, Fri, however this phase of the study can be flexible and worked around your schedule. Training = 100mins cycling at 50% VO2max whilst consuming a high carbohydrate beverage at 20 minute intervals Total time approx. 2 hrs per session.
Visit 17. Assessments of VO2max and a depletion ride. Total time approx. 3 hrs, beginning in the morning, following an overnight fast.
Visit 18. A final experimental session identical to visit 3.

If you require more information please send me an email at b.j.lee@lboro.ac.uk

Thanks

Ben

Yup, it is a tough study. Usually we rely purely on volunteers for similar and more invasive studies which do not pay at all, so to have some funding to pay people with is rare! The support offered alongside it for physiological assessment, training design etc brings the total to nearer the £1000 mark.
