Don't laugh ;)

How do I get a 2.5MB photo down in file size to fit this forum?

Cheers

Doesnt it give you the option to resize on the forum?
Failing that, photobucket does it for you automaticly when you upload a picture i think.

Use your preferred photo editing tool (GIMP / PhotoShop / PaintShopPro / etc) to adjust the image size (usually using the 'Scale' tool or some variant thereof.
Use 'Save As' to save as a JPEG, choosing a compression ratio to get the best balance between file size and image quality.
Between those two, you should end up with a manageable image size.

There are also utilities such as FastStone PhotoResizer that will do the same thing without all the image editing utilities

On most modern Unix-likes you can use ImageMagick:

mogrify -filter Cubic -resize 600x -unsharp 2.0x0.75+0.5+0.0 -quality 85 -format jpg +profile "*" ./*.jpg

I'm sure Irfanview or one of its ilk will let you do it somehow as well.

another quick way to resize is open the pic in 'paint'. (in accessories).
go to image tab, then resize/skew. change the size then save.

This way you don't have to worry about downloading other programs or using external image hosting sites.
