My 2008 commuter bike is starting to show its age and I am trying to decide on a deep refresh or just buy a new one.
The problems are
Internal hub Alfine 8 does not shift down either an internal spring needs changing or the whole innards (££)
The disk brake cables are wearing out too quickly at the caliper. Not sure how to relieve the radius.
The original sealed ST BB unit is probably seized into the rotating eccentric. No way to really break them apart ??
The hinge in the Dahon 26" frame is not locking as reliably.

I really like hub gears.
The front dynohub is built onto 26" rim but has never been serviced.

Is there any new fangled tech tgat can tempt me? Not looking for stupid premium prices.

What sort of prices do you mean by "stupid premium prices"?

I would guess you will be looking for another folder, and there aren't many decent models of those that come cheap.

Are the dots (or are they lines? been 13+ years) aligned under the hub gear?

Yes. The gears change down if I rotate the external shifter part with a screwdriver but it does not go down under internal spring pressure.
I have never dissassembled the inyetnal unit beyond an oil dip.
Is there one individual part or sub assembly that can be replaced ?

Folding is not essential, or 26" but I do like Alfine hub gears with a reliable chain tensioning method. Sliding vertical dropouts if available. Belt drive would be peachy.

As the bike suits you why not get a quote from your bike shop to do the work then atleast you have something to compare it with.

It doesn't sound like a lot of work and sometimes it can go your way and you get an easy mend or you fit better cables and the brakes improve which is rewarding.

As you are prepared to buy a new bike with hub gears, which is going to cost quite a lot, how about taking the suggestion of @Gillstay and buying a secondhand back-up bike while prices are rock-bottom?
